Summary (What is the plot?)
In Afghanistan, a Staff Sergeant and his brother discuss their dream of joining the Army Rangers. When a surprise Taliban attack leaves everyone dead or wounded, the Staff Sergeant—codenamed 81—survives, but can’t save his brother.

Two years later, 81 enters the Ranger Assessment and Selection Program (RASP), one of the most grueling training regimens in the world. Haunted by survivor’s guilt, he keeps to himself, refusing leadership roles and nearly drowning himself during an underwater exercise. Despite concerns from Sergeant Major Sheridan (Dennis Quaid), he pushes forward.

For their final test, the “Death March,” 81’s team is sent into the Colorado wilderness to destroy a classified aircraft and rescue its pilot. But when they find the strange craft and attempt to blow it up, the object stands up—revealing itself as a towering alien war machine armed with searing lasers and devastating firepower.

With communications down and only blanks for ammunition, 81 must rally his surviving squad members—fighting not for glory, but for survival.

Reviews
Critics and audiences have praised this lean, propulsive throwback:

“Lean and propulsive… Ritchson is a compelling screen presence” – Polygon

“Forget gritty realism, War Machine is proudly, almost guilelessly old-fashioned” – The A.V. Club

“A brainless, bombastic, bomb-tastic action romp… far more fun than it has any right to be” – Empire

“Pure popcorn sci-fi chaos—in the best way. The explosions, tension, and nonstop action make it a seriously fun watch” – Metacritic User Review

“A perfect action movie for this year… Like Predator but with a machine” – Metacritic User Review

“An action movie you feel in your body… mixes in the right dose of sci-fi VFX without losing sight of the character” – Screen Rant

“Ritchson delivers a solid and convincing performance. The action sequences are genuinely well-executed, energetic, and plentiful” – KayGazPro

“Gloriously ridiculous while providing genuine thrills alongside grisly kills from immersive set pieces” – Flickering Myth

Storyline
Act One: The Promise. The film opens in Kandahar, Afghanistan, where a Staff Sergeant (Ritchson) and his brother (Courtney) discuss joining the Army Rangers. A Taliban ambush leaves his brother dead and the Staff Sergeant barely surviving. Two years later, now known only as “81,” he enters Ranger selection.

Act Two: The Selection. Weeks of brutal training weed out the weak. 81 refuses leadership, isolates himself, and nearly drowns during an underwater exercise. Sergeant Major Sheridan (Quaid) suggests he step down, but 81 refuses.

Act Three: The Hunt. The final test—the “Death March”—takes the team into the Colorado wilderness. They’re tasked with destroying a downed aircraft. When they attempt to blow it up, the object rises: a skyscraper-sized alien war machine with lasers capable of disintegrating human flesh. With blanks for ammunition and communications dead, 81 and his surviving squad must use their training to survive.

Act Four: The Fight. As the machine picks off the team one by one, 81 discovers its weakness: an exposed ventilation port that vents heat. The climax sees 81 carry his wounded comrade 7 (James) across the finish line, having finally embraced leadership. The final scene reveals more machines descending to Earth, setting up a potential sequel.
