Summary (What is the plot?)
It’s 1952 in New York City, and Marty Mauser (Timothée Chalamet) is a scrawny kid with a pathetic mustache but supreme self-confidence. A prodigiously talented table tennis player working at a shoe store, he’s convinced it’s his destiny to become the world champion. To achieve this, he’ll go to any lengths—lying, cheating, stealing, and hustling his way through a series of increasingly desperate schemes.
When Marty travels to London for the world championship tournament, his showmanship earns him attention—but a humbling defeat at the hands of a Japanese player with a revolutionary new paddle sends him crashing back to New York in disgrace. Now in debt and stripped of job, money, and self-respect, Marty must rebuild his ego and reputation at whatever cost.
His journey involves juggling multiple disasters: an affair with retired movie star Kay Stone (Gwyneth Paltrow) while trying to con her wealthy husband Milton (Kevin O’Leary) ; discovering that his childhood friend Rachel (Odessa A’zion) is pregnant with his child ; trying to cash in on a reward for a lost dog belonging to a dangerous gangster (Abel Ferrara) ; and evading his hypochondriac mother (Fran Drescher) and a vengeful uncle. Through it all, Marty’s relentless charisma and refusal to accept defeat keep him spinning ever more elaborate schemes in pursuit of greatness.
